How do you influence your world?

People often ask how I have the energy to dive into what I do. Well, it’s easy.  I’m a type triple A personality with a pinch of obsessive compulsive and a dash of dreams and hope. But in all reality, I probably don’t work and play as hard as many think, but in everything that I’ve done I find that the small things make the biggest impact.

Sure we can trump out, run for president and solve world hunger. But let’s admit it, that job is left to one person out of 300 million in a draw of fate and insanity every 4 years. I like to think that the friendly hello as your going through the fast food drive through and a gracious thank you have a far greater impact when practiced regularly. Its volunteering to apply your skills and expertise to a local non-profit so they can grow and flurish. Its taking the time to sit down with you child when they’ve been bad and talking with them about the consequences and the rewards for being good.

We all do things everyday that positively influence our world, both big and small.  So here’s my question to you the fresh readers of this blog. How do you influence your world?

Influencing your world, starts with your inner self. Everyone has a gift. Some days it is as simple as paying for the person’s coffee that is behind you in line. Look for the little things, as they snowball in to the big things. I influence my community by educating them about autism. My son Chandler is seven and he is a bright, funny, and sweet little boy, and he doesn’t talk. Every day he influences my decisions and brightens my day with his smile and the world needs to know that all people are different, and acceptance is the key. He went to his first birthday party for a boy in his class, and I overheard another boy asking “Why doesn’t he talk?”, and a girl came to his defense, in her party dress, with her hands on her hips “Because he was born different and that is just fine!” It is this little moments of clarity that move me.

I believe it IS the small things. I choose to influence the world by serving and loving. Two of the most basic, most important yet most over looked needs in this world. If everyone would choose to serve and love, we could truly change and influence our world.

BIG: I mentor and educate at-risk teens, guiding them to live whole lives with academic knowledge, self-respect, care for others and overall wellness. Their generation will have the resources and hope to break the cycle of poverty and violence, and future generations will benefit because of it.

SMALL: Smiling, recycling, biking, high-fiving, etc. ;)

I try to influence my world with my patients. I work in a hospital and I see scared, frightened, dismayed, bewildered patients every day. I know I have “the power” in my job, to talk with them, listen to them, get them looking good–as close to normal as I can—-get them smelling fresh and smile at them and sing to myself until they ask me what it is I’m singing….and music opens up a whole new door…and hopefully, soon, we have a relationship, such as it is in such a place…..and they can smile and meet their family and feel better about themselves. I can make that difference everyday….in a lot of ways.
